It's A 12-Game Season Now
Through the disaster known as the 3-11 record the Brewers are sporting so far in September, one thing has appeared, a flat-out, 12-game race for the playoffs. There is no more protecting a lead, or trying to make up ground on someone, the Phillies and Brewers start dead-even tomorrow night, both with just twelve games remaining on the schedule.
Since sweeping the Cardinals in St. Louis early in the second half, the Crew has had three "big" series, vs. the Cubs, vs. the Mets, and at the Phillies. Their record in those series, 0-11. A big problem with that is the latter two series have taken place in September, in the middle of a playoff race.
Fans are getting restless, Corey Hart said the other day it was good to leave Milwaukee and all the boos, and at first, I somewhat agreed with him. I mean, some players were hearing it just for entering a game. But now Corey, you guys had your chance in Philly to get back in the fans good graces, and you fell flat on your face. Averaging 2.5 runs in a stadium as small as Philadelphia's is pathetic. It's worst-team-in-the-NL bad. Scoring 38 runs in 14 games (a 2.7 average) is going to lead you to a 3-11 record.
This slump is not on the pitching, although they haven't done much to help out the slumping offense, but it's on the bats. This is the first time in two years we have seen Ryan Braun struggle, so much to the point his average has dropped 14 points since the beginning of September. That he's hitting just .192 this month, along with pretty much everyone else on the team.
It's time to forget the first 150 games, tomorrow CC Sabathia takes the mound at Wrigley, and the Brewers need a win. The Crew has to have tomorrow's game, if they lose, I can't see them even smelling the playoffs in two weeks when the season ends. It all starts tomorrow, today is the teams' first off-day of the month (non-rain induced), so maybe it will help them wipe the slate clean, relax, and come out refreshed and take it to the Cubs the way the Cubs took it to them in Milwaukee last time.
